Launch of ‘Working with Soil’ initiative
1st July, 2011
The British Society of Soil Science (BSSS) and its professional practice arm, the Institute of Professional Soil Scientists (IPSS) are launching the first tranche of task-based competency statements, the aim of which is to ensure that soil-related work is carried out to adequate standards by appropriately qualified professional scientists. Several of the documents have been prepared with inputs from Land Research Associates.
Soil and the processes that operate within it influence a wide range of outcomes across society and the economy. The profitability of land-based industries, the effectiveness of environmental improvement and regulation, the richness of wildlife habitats and even the playability of sports turf are all dependent on the application of soil science.
The documents, which will be freely available for use by organisations contracting out work with a soil science component, describe the foundation skills required to investigate and describe soils in the field, and seven further application-related tasks. Each of the eight documents identify the minimum qualifications, skills, knowledge and expertise that should be held by a scientist or engineer carrying out each task in a professional capacity.
The launch event for the initiative will be held at 2pm, 20th July at the Royal Geographical Society, Kensington, London. If you wish to attend please email admin@soils.org.uk
